// Publisher notes //

Philadelphia is a sports mad city with a proud history but, occasionally, a poor reputation. While gun violence, poverty and drug-use continue to blight people’s lives, Philadelphia is a city of hope. A place where sport, especially soccer, is being put to use to improve people’s lives.

We speak to the people behind the events that unite the community and bring soccer players from around the world to Pennsylvania every year. From Barboyse Noisette and Kensington Soccer Club, where children are met with empathy, compassion and ball, to Nolan Bair, Executive President of the Casa Soccer League, and Robbie Smukler, founder of grassroots tournament the Icarus Cup.

At the top level of the professional game, Philly have been represented in the MLS by the Philadelphia Union since 2010. We speak exclusively to Head Coach Jim Curtin and Philly-native, promising striker Chis Donovan about representing his hometown club.

Pre-dating the club are the supporters group Sons of Ben, who played a key role in bringing professional soccer to the city. Alex Connor speaks to Ryan Bross about the fans who willed their club into existence and then followed them to an MLS Cup win, all while playing an active role in their community.

In a city that loves its food and knows how to have a good time, we also include Glory regulars; where to eat, drink and rest your weary head.
