Glory | City Stories: Seville
// Publisher notes //
While Barcelona and Real Madrid dominate Spanish football, there is a city in the south of the country with a longer footballing history and boasting two of only nine clubs to have ever won Spain’s top-flight.
With those two clubs due to meet in El Gran Derbi, we packed our bags and headed to Seville for Real Betis Balompie vs Sevilla FC. It was quite the weekend.
The latest in our City Stories series, this issue of Glory showcases these often overlooked Spanish giants, with in-depth focus pieces on both clubs, as well as a fan’s perspective on each.
We profile Sevilla FC Sporting Director Ramón Rodriguez `Monchi´ and meet his Betis counterpart, Antonio Cordón. We chat to Sevilla’s Vice-President José María del Nido Carrasco on their plans for the future, plus ask Betis Head Coach Manuel Pellegrini how he prepares a team for the fiercest game of their season.
We set the scene for one of the most passionate derbies in world football with a look back at the birth of the rivalry, through to modern-day classics, before Theo McInnes’ photo essay tells the story of derby day in 2022.
Of course, we also have our regular features to help you plan your own weekend of football and food in the Spanish sun, with ideas on where to stay, eat and drink.
Vamos ir al sol y disfruta Seville.
